Equity - Integration - Empowerment

CBHP focuses on training and empowering Village Health Workers as the main agents of change in the villages of Buldana, India. In September 2010, inspired by the success of the Jamkhed model for rural transformation in India, Dr Moses Kharat decided to return to his native town of Buldana to dedicate his energies to working with the rural poor. The project eventually became known as the Community Based Health Project (CBHP). While the project is still is in its infancy, it currently operates in eight project villages. CBHP focuses on training and empowering Village Health Workers (VHWs) as the main agents of change in their villages, while supporting them with Mobile Health Teams (MHTs) and referral clinics. The long-term goal is to see villagers fully empowered to take ownership of their health to overcome health inequity. CBHP uses a community-based approach to help mitigate health and social injustices in rural India, whilst creating awareness of these issues in Australia. For every person in rural India to be empowered to take ownership of their health and to overcome health and social injustices For the Australian community to be aware of and engaged in global health issues and solutions The CBHP logo is a representation of the banyan tree, the national tree of India. As the banyan tree grows, its branches send down new roots into the ground so that eventually, a whole forest can find its origin from a single seed. This represents the work we do at the Community Based Health Project. The Village Health Workers light the candles of health for all, spreading the prosperity of good health from village to village so that one day the entire world may heal. CBHP is registered with the United Nations Department of Social and Economic Affairs (DESA) and Guidestar India as St. Luke’s Community Health and Development Centre.
